I replaced my ignition switch last spring when I bought my 5460. I bought the replacement on ebay. It was a new Oregon part (33-393). During the winter the ignition switch would freeze and I had to use a heat gun to warm it up so I could start the tractor on several occasions.
Well, the tractor suddenly doesn't turn over at all. The key now has no "spring" feel to it when I turn the key. It feels "loose". Battery is at 12.4V. I have 12.4V at the ignition switch connector too. I think the switch got damaged with all my forceful twisting. It is a 5-prong keyed switch with a round metal casing.
I have a new one on order. My question is: has anyone opened up one of these? It seems like the base is pressed over the casing. I can't get it to pry open. I'm doing this for curiosity sake but if I do get it open and can easily reposition a spring or make some easy fix then I might be able to salvage a spare.
Just curious as to suggestions on how to open this up.
Paul.

i replaced the one on the 816 with a mercury outboard ign. switch. works great and has a rubber cover over the switch to keep out rain and dirt. plus it is made with stainless material so it should last awhile. just a thought for ya. the one i used is a standard without push to chock.

Great idea. But, I already ordered the same type. Maybe next time. I investigated the switch and found that in the key slot there were two loose pieces of metal. One of which I could actually pull out with tweezers. Looks like when it was frozen I twisted a bit too hard and cracked this part with the key.
Thanks,
Paul.
