I replaced a bad battery on my 5460 and fired it up the other day. After a couple seconds of running it died. Now, I can't get it to run. The battery does a nice job of turning over the engine. I also replaced the throttle cable at the same time. It easily and fully moves the throttle on the carb.
Any ideas on how to proceed. I do have a visible layer of fuel at the bottom of the tank but I guess I could top this off. This tractor ran well all summer/fall. I attached my new snowblower attachment and it apparently did not like that!
Any recommendations are appreciated. I'll be working on this tractor this weekend.
I'll probably put a spare spark plug in the plug wire and hold it agains the cylinder head and see if I get a spark while cranking.
What issues could I have with fuel delivery? Could the fuel pump be bad? How do I test this?...disconnect hose from carb and run the starter and look for fuel?
TIA,
Paul.

sounds like a clogged fuel line. yes take loose at the carb turn over see if you get fuel pumping out. if so you could have a stuck needle in the carb.

No.
The problem transformed from it turning over but not starting to just a clunk when I turn the starter key.
I have filled the gas tank. I have replaced the spark plug (and the original plug had a nice smell of gas so I don't think I have a fuel delivery problem. I have a new battery and I even charged it (just to make sure) I get spark (using an old plug held against the cylinder head) I replaced my starter brushes (not really the reason...I just had the new brushes to install). I did free up the pinion gear that was sticking at times.
The clunk is the starter pinion locking against the flywheel. I am worried my engine is frozen somehow in the cold weather.
I haven't checked the points (new this summer).
Also, I have a new (for me) snow thrower attached and am wondering if the PTO is engaged (even though the handle is at the disengaged position) and locking the engine from rotating when I turn the key.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
Unfortunately, I could not use the snowthrower today (8" snow blizzard) and resorted to a shovel.

Hi Paul
Boy that is a boomer. I'll just go over what I would do if I got it into shop to Ck. 1 . ckeck and make sure it has new fresh gas. 2. make sure it has gas to the carb. 3. Pull off the settlement bowel. 4. If it is real cold it may be frozen. 5. Put in a new plug. 6. Check the points. replace if possible. 7. Replace the condenser. 8.Turn engine over by hand. make sure it is not locked up. 9. If starter is not engaging. Remove and clean the bendex don't put oil or grease on shaft. use dry graifite . just a small amt. 10. Make sure the batt has a high charge. 11. If you change the points be sure and replace the point's push rod. 12. but most of all ck the compression. 13. If the comp is low .pull the head and do a good clean out. I don't like using it but you can use a little starter fluid. Once it starts they maybe will run. so I guess you have done most all of it. If you can turn the engine by hand it should work with the starter. That is all I can think of at this time. Thanks Bruce g

Hi Paul I just had a brain fart. The switch can cause the problems. Run a temp wire from the batt to the coil. and by pass the starter senloid. use a jumper cable from the batt postive post to the starter. and see if that will turn the engine. I got a new switch from John Deere part # AM 103286 for $12.00. That fit my 8123 and I think it is the same as yours. pattern # 3497644 Bruce g

All is well!
I used a electric heat gun to warm up the flywheel and crankcase for about 10 minutes and it turned over easily and started right up! Must have been moisture that froze and locked up the engine (not sure where it would have gotten into.
I ran my snow thrower for about 30 minutes and had a blast. This thing is awesome. I can't wait until the next snow storm....no more hand shoveling our driveway.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I do need a new choke cable. Mine never came with the knob and it is frozen. But, I operate the choke at the carb for now.
Paul.
