An installation tool should always be used when installing an oil seal. The use of a tool can make installation easier and lower the possibility damaging the seal. A hydraulic press is advised to properly install the seal. The images below describe examples of both proper and improper installation of oil seals. In each proper method, the installation load is absorbed by either the housing or the bottom plate to prevent seal damage. This will insure a secure fit for the seal within the bore.
